Rugby: Falcons swoop for ex-Scotland scrum half Blair

Former Edinburgh and Scotland scrum half Mike Blair is to join Newcastle Falcons in a two-year deal.

Today’s move brings to an end a 12-month stint at French Division Two side Brive and is set to see the British and Irish Lion competing at Aviva Premiership level as well as renewing rivalry with another Scotland No 8, Rory Lawson.

Meanwhile, Simon Cross, coach of Blair’s former club Edinburgh Accies, says his team will waste no time preparing for the British and Irish Cup after results of two concluding Premiership matches elsewhere confirmed their top-four
finish. However, Stirling’s win at Dundee and Melrose’s home victory over Aberdeen shattered Heriot’s who dropped to seventh.

There was relief for Currie as they avoided a play-off with National League runners-up Hawick. That now falls to Dundee.

Shortly after one of the most absorbing league campaigns ended Simon Cross used social media to declare: “I’m immensely proud of an extremely hard working group of players.”
