Rugby: Duo added to Watsonians ranks

Watsonians have recruited two new players as they prepare for the RBS
National League which gets underway next month.

Full-back Rory Steele, the older brother of Leicester Tigers player Scott, has moved to Myreside from Hamilton and prop Riaan Basson has arrived from South Africa.

Steele, who formerly played for Dumfries, impressed last season with his attacking runs from deep and calmness in defence for Hamilton.

He then became a firm fixture in the Watsonians side that won three events on the Kings of the Sevens circuit in April and May and suitably impressed Watsonians head coach Marcus Di Rollo. The 21-year-old has also been training with the Scotland Sevens extended squad this summer and should start the season in the 15 jersey at Myreside.

With Di Rollo likely to take a step back from playing this year it means that the ’Sonians back line will be sprinkled with young talent, with the likes of Jack Ferguson, Tom Hart and Steele set to be involved.

Basson, also 21, is from Durban and will add bulk to the Watsonians front-row. His arrival comes at a good time, with former Watsonians captain Kian Coertze having left the club.
Boroughmuir is his likely destination.
