Rugby: Donaldson happy with haul at West

CURRIE coach Ally Donaldson was today reflecting on a dominant 63-12 win away to West of Scotland that keeps the Malleny Park men on track for a Scottish Hydro Premiership Division One title showdown with current champions Ayr.

Donaldson said: "We were a bit worried because of injury concerns. We had no recognised kicker and we had Graham White at stand off. He hadn't played there since he was Under 18. He played very well.

"West had played well against Ayr last Tuesday and I think that had taken a lot out of them. But to win by that much was satisfying. It's another five points and it was good to have the bonus point by half time."

Currie were rarely troubled and ended the afternoon with a tally of nine converted scores. Jamie Thomson and Willie Moala each claimed two touchdowns, while James Johnstone, Stevie Burton, Graham White, Ross Weston and Mike Entwistle had one apiece. Richard Snedden kicked seven conversions and Johnny Smith added two after entering the fray in the second half.

Currie will be back in action tomorrow night at home to Boroughmuir. Donaldson insists that the focus is firmly on the job in hand with no risk of looking ahead to the clash with Ayr on May 1, which nonetheless is looking increasingly like a title decider.

"There is still a lot of rugby to be played," added the coach. "It's a clich but we need to take each game as it comes. Our game against Boroughmuir is a derby so that adds a bit of spice."

Currie will then play Selkirk on Saturday evening. With the Borders club hosting its youth sevens tournament during the day, it had appeared likely that the Premiership clash would be moved to a back pitch. However, agreement has been reached to play after the sevens final.

Meanwhile, Musselburgh completed their Division Three campaign in style when they signed off with an impressive 44-19 win over Garnock at Stoneyhill.

Results the previous week had ensured 'Burgh's survival, and Donald MacDonald's side celebrated with some champagne rugby in a game that was effectively won by the interval.

Neil Robert bagged a hat trick of tries, while Andrew Cook and Brian Walls grabbed one each and Walls ended the day with a personal haul of 24 points after adding all five conversions and kicking three penalties
