Rugby: Boroughmuir boost their survival hopes with six tries

Boroughmuir head coach Fergus Pringle insists Saturday’s six-try haul in a 40-20 RBS Premiership win over Dundee High has been some time in the making.

He is now urging his players to repeat their effort in the coming weeks as the Meggetland side bid to secure their top-flight survival.

Rob Cairns and Sep Visser had a try apiece and Sam Johnson bagged a double as ’Muir reached the interval
with a 25-3 lead, Harry
Leonard booting a penalty and a conversion, while Jack
Steele landed a penalty for the visitors.

Steele converted a Richie Hawkins try early in the
second half but Leonard was on
target with a penalty before slotting the conversion after Stevie Wilson dotted down for Boroughmuir’s sixth try – Malcolm Clapperton having claimed the fifth – to
seal ’Muir’s third win of the
campaign.

Even late tries for Dundee from Brandyn Laursen and Steele failed to tarnish Pringle’s satisfaction with the efforts of his men.

“I was pretty happy with
that performance. It was
really a big game for us.

“I thought we set the
platform with our defence and took the opportunities when they came our way,” said the coach, who believes the mood in the ’Muir camp has been on a more positive trajectory for some time.

“For me it changed a while ago, probably about six
weeks ago, but we haven’t had a lot of league games to show that. We know we have turned things around on the training paddock, it’s just a case of showing it on the field,” he added.

While the result has hauled ’Muir to within striking distance of the teams immediately above them in the league table, Pringle knows that nothing has been achieved by one impressive performance,
adding: “We wanted to get a result and the boys were
really desperate to show that
we have turned things around,” he stated.

“Obviously we have a lot
of big games coming up but we want to take them one game at a time and this is a start.”

Elsewhere, Edinburgh
Accies took a massive step towards safety and boosted
their chances of securing a
British & Irish Cup place
with a gutsy 20-19 success
over Melrose at the
Greenyards.

Accies had tries from
Dan Teague, Nyle Godsmark and Iain Berthinussen,
plus a conversion and penalty by Ruaridh Bonner as they rallied after trailing at half-time to build a lead before holding
off a late fight back by the
Borderers.

Haddington posted their third win of the Championship B campaign when they
saw off Perthshire 32-12 at Neilson Park. Although still occupying a relegation
play-off spot, Haddington are now within striking distance of the teams above them, with a trip to face basement side Morgan Academy next on the schedule.

Meanwhile, Watsonians
remain second behind Hawick in the RBS National League but a 24-10 defeat at home to
Capital rivals Stewart’s Melville on Friday night has dealt another blow to their chances of securing a return to the
Premiership.
