Rugby: Battle lines drawn to keep hold of in-demand Chalmers

Scottish Rugby may have to battle to keep Craig Chalmers in its international coaching set-up after it emerged today that the former Grand Slam stand-off is the target of an overseas bid.

Chalmers, 43, was only recently appointed backs coach of a Scotland A side who will face England Saxons at Galashiels on February 3 in a move providing overdue recognition for the man who steered his Melrose club to the latest Premiership title and sundry other accolades.

But in a “hands off” message on the Melrose club website, it is made clear that overtures to join top international side are coming from the pro ranks.

“Craig has recently been named as the backs coach for Scotland A and has turned down a three-month opportunity to be the backs coach of an International side who competed in the 2011 World Cup,” said Melrose boss Mike Dalgetty.
