Rugby: Ayr see opportunity to return to top of league

AYR welcome West of Scotland to Millbrae this evening for a rearranged league match which could take them back to the top of the league. The champions, for whom this is the second of three games in eight days, are five points behind Currie, who have played one match more.

Damien Kelly starts at lock for Ayr after coming off the bench in their 32-17 win over Glasgow Hawks on Friday night. Ross Curle is rested after picking up a slight knock during that game, while Jonny McClung starts at centre and Andy Wilson returns to the wing.

"Friday night's game against Glasgow Hawks was a very tough challenge for us and we were delighted to come away with a bonus-point win," Ayr coach Kenny Murray said. "We expect the West game to be another physical encounter as they have a robust group of forwards and their set-piece is very strong.

"A good win against West would take us back joint top with Currie and make for an interesting finale to the season. It looks like we will have to play our remaining six league games and Scottish Cup Final within the next four to five weeks. This will be a heck of a challenge and will test the fitness and staying power of our squad."

Tonight's game is the penultimate league fixture for West, who are safe in ninth place.
