Ross will now fight for the No10 shirt with Duncan Hodge and Chris Paterson, although the latter could find his career directed towards the full-back berth following a successful start to his international career in that position.

Reivers said yesterday that they will announce on Monday the signing of "an exciting new player", understood to be Ross, along with the re-signing of"an important member of the current squad".

West of Scotland will join forces with local rivals Glasgow Hawks today to mark the official opening of their new grandstand at Burnbrae.

Their combined forces will form a West President's XV who will face a star-studded Co-optimists line-up in the later of two celebratory matches, each featuring a host of big names from past and present. Former Lions prop Sandy Carmichael will perform the official tape-cutting at the end of the first game between Glasgow Classics and Scotland Classics.

Among the former Murrayfield heroes listed to appear in the Classics tussle are Iwan Tukalo, Ewan Kennedy and, Dave McIvor. The kick-off times are 1pm and 2.30pm, while the Co-optimists will include many players currently contracted to either Glasgow Caley Reds or Edinburgh Reivers.
