Robinson set to meet SRU chief after Six Nations flop

SCOTLAND coach Andy Robinson is expected to inform the SRU tomorrow whether he believes he can continue to take Scotland forward.

Robinson stated at the end of the recent RBS Six Nations that he would take the next couple of weeks to think about the future, and, after his first wooden spoon with Scotland, whether he was confident that he was the right man to continue as Scotland’s head coach. He will meet SRU chief executive Mark Dodson at Murrayfield tomorrow for the first time since the championship ended.

Dodson, who is currently in Dublin on European rugby business, insists the meeting will be informal and he does not expect there to be a decision on Robinson’s future immediately.

The coach is compiling his end-of-season review to present to the SRU management group, but whether he stays or goes remains up in the air. In three seasons under Robinson Scotland have won 12 of their 29 Test matches, including a first Test series win in the southern hemisphere, over Argentina.

There have also been Murrayfield victories over Australia and South Africa and a first Six Nations triumph in Ireland.

However, the paltry return of just two wins and a draw in 15 championship matches, combined with a failure to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time, has increased pressure on the SRU. Dodson has backed Robinson and insisted that he will be given time, the coach having signed a lucrative four-year contract a year ago that takes him beyond the next World Cup. The chief executive also backed the signing of two new coaches from Australia in Scott Johnson and Matt Taylor to assist Robinson and, were he to walk away, or the SRU to sack him now, it could leave national squad plans in disarray.

Any decision on Robinson’s future is not expected to be made until next month.
