Robbie Lamb and Ryan Coleman cut the mustard for Lithgae

Linlithgow Academy beat league champions St Margaret's Academy to win the West Lothian Schools' under-14 League Cup final at Armadale.

Second-half goals from Lithgae's Robbie Lamb and Ryan Coleman were enough to see off the favourites, who lacked a cutting edge up front throughout a match where wet and windy conditions limited the number of chances created.

St Margaret's started the match more quickly than their counterparts. In the opening minute, David Porcher dribbled up the right wing before cutting into the area from the byline. His shot was well saved by Linlithgow goalkeeper Kieran Kennedy.

Porcher was St Margaret's liveliest player and he put a free kick narrowly wide of the left post from 20 yards out. Moments later, his shot from the right side of the area was tipped wide after a low save from Kennedy.

After 20 minutes, Linlithgow's Robbie Brown crossed to John Blackburn whose shot from ten yards flew narrowly over the bar. Two minutes later, Lamb headed wide after a Jamie Melling's corner.

Linlithgow scored their first goal a quarter of an hour after the start of the second half. Andrew Boyle's long through ball found the feet of Lamb who dribbled into the area before rifling the ball past goalkeeper Matthew Campbell into the top right corner.

St Margaret's nearly replied instantly. A deep free kick, taken by Fraser Cormack met the head of Porcher, but Kennedy was able to catch the shot.

The lead was doubled with ten minutes remaining. Brown's shot from the edge of the area, after a Melling corner, fell to Coleman who finished off the move from close range.

In the closing stages of the match, Porcher had a chance to pull a goal back for St Margaret's with an indirect free kick inside the Linlithgow penalty area. After Kennedy picked up a back pass, Porcher shot over from the resulting free kick.

Darren Pegg, the St Margaret's Academy coach, paid tribute to his team after a great season. He said: "It was a good even match for most of the game. In the second half, the wind gave Linlithgow an advantage going forward. When they got their first goal, it was going to be a difficult task for us to equalise after that. We've played well all season, winning the league, but it is Linlithgow's day today and all the best to them."

Linlithgow Academy coach Chris McGrane felt that his team deserved the win as they were more clinical in front of goal than their opponents. He said: "It was a fantastic performance. They worked really hard. There was a lot of quality in both sides. We just had that wee bit more on the day and both the finishes were excellent. We didn't give them a sniff at goal."
