RBS Regional Cup rugby: Whitecraigs knock Hawks off perch in shock cup triumph

Whitecraigs caused a big shock on Saturday by reaching the RBS West Regional Cup final, holding Glasgow Hawks at Old Anniesland.

The RBS Premier C side held firm to draw 29-29 after extra time. As the visitors had scored four tries to the hosts’ three, they go through to a home final with Ayr next month.

Whitecraigs tries came from Ben Blamire, Steven Whittet, Hamish Hunter and Ally Stevenson, with two from Kerr Grossman and one from Tom Steven not enough for Hawks.

In the other semi, Ayr progressed against Dumfries, with tries by John Willis (2), Cammy Taylor, Pa Thomson and Andy Wilson in the 31-6 win.

In the RBS Caledonia Regional Cup, Dundee HSFP and Aberdeen Grammar reached the final.

At Bridgehaugh, Dundee HSFP edged out Stirling County 14-13. And at Duffus Park in Cupar, Howe of Fife and Aberdeen Grammar shared 75 points in a thriller, the Rubislaw men eventually coming through 48-27, ex-Howe of Fife player Will Wardlaw scoring two of their tries.

In the RBS Edinburgh Regional Cup, Heriot’s will take on Boroughmuir in the final. Heriot’s, fresh from recent wins over Hamilton and Haddington, defeated Currie 26-12 in their semi-final at Goldenacre. OJ Brown, Jason Hill and captain Graham Wilson scored tries for the home side, with Mike Entwhistle scoring two for the injury-hit visitors.

At Meggetland, Boroughmuir beat Biggar 35-7, Keith Buchan scoring two tries for Fergus Pringle’s men. In the one RBS Premier B match played, Hawick beat Edinburgh Accies 29-20.
