RBS Regional Cup rugby: Hawick strike top form to give Leck his first victory

Hawick produced their best all-round performance of the season to see off Peebles at the Gytes in the RBS Border Regional Cup on Saturday.

The 37-7 victory gave new head coach Phil Leck his first success in charge of the Greens and the showing was much improved from the loss a fortnight ago to Kelso.

Hawick’s five tries came from Steven Anderson, Bruce McNeil, Greg Cottrell, Rory Hutton and Garry Johnstone with Neil Renwick kicking the rest of the points.

Matt Carryer scored the only try for Peebles and the win leaves Hawick second in the table behind Gala.

This coming weekend they travel to the leaders in what will be a much sterner test.

Melrose came out of the blocks flying and put Jed-Forest to the sword in the first 30 minutes as they eased to a win at Riverside Park.

The British & Irish Cup side were leading 29-0 early on, scoring four tries in quick time through a trio of club international caps - Fraser Thomson, Andrew Skeen and Graeme Dodds - and Joe Helps. Skeen kicked three conversions and a penalty.

With the game already lost, the hosts started to play some good rugby and in the end went down to a more respectable 29-17, two tries coming from Iain Chisholm and one from Connor Hogg with a conversion by Andy McLean.

At Philiphaugh, Kelso beat Selkirk for the second time in a matter of weeks, although this match was much closer than the last one.

The men from Poyder Park won 7-6, their ex-Edinburgh Accies man, Ali Marsh, scoring a try on 27 minutes which was converted by Mark Chester, before David Cassidy kicked two penalties for the hosts in the second half.

Ayr are through to the RBS West Regional Cup semi-finals after they defeated West of Scotland at Burnbrae.

The Millbrae men recorded a comfortable 38-8 victory in the first match to be played in the event.

Their tries came from Grant Anderson, Mark Stewart, Richard Dalgleish, Ross Curle, Rob Colhoun and Hayden Wisnewski, with four conversions coming from teenager Robbie Fergusson.

The other three last eight ties take place on December 17.

Meanwhile, a big crowd turned out at Bridgehaugh to see Stirling County open up their RBS Caledonia Regional Cup campaign with a 30-16 win over Falkirk.

The result means the top flight side top Group B with a trip to Perthshire coming up this coming weekend.
