RBS Premier b & C: Victories secure premiership places for Heriot’s and Accies next season

Heriot’s and Edinburgh Accies both earned their top-flight spots for 2012/13 in style with bonus point victories on Saturday.

The Edinburgh duo finished in the top two positions in RBS Premier B, Heriot’s seeing off Stewart’s Melville and Accies clocking up a victory at Glasgow Hawks.

At Goldenacre, Heriot’s built up a 16-5 lead at the interval thanks to the boot of skipper Graham Wilson and a penalty try. After the interval they scored tries through Gregor Lawson (2), Max Learmonth and Cammy Ferguson.

Stewart’s Melville stuck in all afternoon but the hosts were too powerful upfront and won 42-13 to leave Heriot’s coaches Mark Appleson and Graham Marshall delighted.

Along the M8 at Old Anniesland, Edinburgh Accies beat Glasgow Hawks 31-24.

In a frantic encounter, Hawks started off well with Peter Jericevich scoring a try, kicking a penalty and a conversion to put them 10-0 up.

Front-row man Duncan McLeod then scored a converted try of his own to get the visitors into the match. A try by Scotland under-20 man Jamie Farndale and five points by Ruairidh Bonner put Accies 17-10 up at the break.

After the interval, a second Farndale try and one from Greg Campbell secured the bonus point for the visitors. At 31-10 up they were coasting before a fightback from Hawks saw converted tries from Steven Leckie and Tom Preece. Ultimately though, this proved to be too little too late.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Hawick won 30-24 at Jed, but it was not enough to get them a top-two spot. In a tight match, late tries from Liam Lawrence and Rory Sutherland gave the Greens victory.

And Watsonians got their first win in this division, coming out on top 61-28 at Hamilton having been down at the interval.
