Rangers 3 - 0 Aberdeen: How the players rated on each side

Ratings out of ten for every player as Rangers easily defeated Aberdeen at Ibrox.

RANGERS

Wes Foderingham - 6

Was a little fortunate to block Stevie May’s shot after hastily deciding to close down the striker as he threatened to run through on goal. Claimed a couple of high crosses but otherwise had little to do.

James Tavernier - 9

The man of the match. Two goals, offered a threatening attacking option from deep all game, and had another solid defensive performance in what’s been a much improved 2017/18 season for the right back.

Bruno Alves - 8

Won everything that came his way in the air.

Danny Wilson - 7

Played a solid supporting role to Alves and made a couple of vital clearances in the box.

Declan John - 7

Flitted in and out of the game but looked a threat when he did manage to get involved in the opposing half.

Ross McCrorie - 7

Played his role well and almost had an assist with a perfectly-weighted ball through for Josh Windass, only for the attacker to be flagged offside. Made a couple of rash challenges.

Ryan Jack - 8

Excellent in the first 30 minutes where he continually attacked the right and allowed Rangers to overload the Aberdeen defence in that area. Quieter after the Dons’ formation change, but still played well.

Jason Holt - 8

Required to do a lot of running as part of a two-man central unit, but that’s just the thing he’s cut out for. Won the penalty for the opening goal through sheer alertness, anticipation and speed of movement.

Carlos Pena - 6

Played well and scored in the first half, justifying his selection. However, his performance levels dropped completely in the second and he was deservedly hooked.

Kenny Miller - 7

The veteran was outstanding in the opening period. His movement out to the flanks caused Aberdeen endless problems as he linked well with team-mates. Another whose performance dropped in the second 45.

Josh Windass - 7

Like his strike-partner, his movement was really strong. His final ball is not as consistent as it needs to be, though he managed to notch an assist with a cross for Tavernier to score the third.

SUBS

Daniel Candeias (on for Carlos Pena) - 6 - Buzzed about in attack, though Tavernier’s goal within two minutes of his introduction meant the game was as good as over.

Ryan Hardie (on for Josh Windass) - n/a - No time

ABERDEEN

Joe Lewis - 7

Made a couple of fairly impressive stops, including a tip over from Pena where he had to be at full stretch. Not at fault for the goals and actually got a toe to Tavernier’s penalty but couldn’t keep it out.

Anthony O’Connor - 5

Considering the speed of the game, his lack of mobility limited his output in both midfield and defence.

Kari Arnason - 6

Perhaps the best of the back three with a couple of headed clearances, but that’s really not saying much.

Scott McKenna - 5

Was posted missing at the second goal after following Miller out to the left-flank, leaving a big hole which Arnason had to cover when Holt burst into the box. Looked more comfortable as part of a two-man unit.

Shay Logan - 5

Another quiet performance in what’s been an unusually reserved season from the full-back to this point.

Kenny McLean - 7

Aberdeen’s best player on the night. Competed well and made a couple of decent passes, including the aforementioned one to May which almost got the Dons back into the game at 1-0.

Greg Tansey - 3

Oh dear. Sluggish in possession, over-run by his opponents with the ball, and gave away the penalty with a wild challenge. Hooked before half-time: the calling card of a dreadful performance.

Graeme Shinnie - 6

He contributed to the attack by getting forward to support, often acting as the link between the forwards and wide players. However, badly ball-watched in the build-up to Rangers’ second, allowing Holt to break through.

Andy Considine - 6

Defensively maybe not his best - though he was hung out to dry at Rangers’ third - but he did always offer an outlet on the left and played with real determination, unlike a few of his team-mates.

Ryan Christie - 5

He did some things well. Launched a couple of counter-attacks by himself, played the pass through for Gary Mackay-Steven, and competed well on the defensive end. However, it never came off for him around the opposing penalty box and he was sent off for two obvious and needless bookings.

Stevie May - 6

Looked a threat early on but faded as the match continued.

Gary Mackay-Steven (on for Greg Tansey) - 4 - The other calling card of a dreadful performance? The sub who gets subbed.

Greg Stewart (on for Kari Arnason) - 5 - There was little life left in Aberdeen with 12 minutes remaining and he couldn’t do anything to rouse them.
