Ramsay provides charity boost with sparkling 62

RICHIE Ramsay warmed up for this week’s Qatar Masters by winning the Emirates Airline Invitational with a ten-under-par 62 over the Yas Links Golf Club in Abu Dhabi.

His sensational effort resulted in an unexpected boost for Help the Heroes and Cornerstone, with the Aberdonian getting to donate $50,000 to his chosen charities as part of his prize.

Ramsay, who holed a 35-foot eagle putt on the seventh as he went out in 29, finished three shots clear of Richard Finch and Thorbjorn Olesen.

The 50-strong field also included last year’s winner Retief Goosen, 2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell and Sergio Garcia, as well as Ryder Cup captains Colin Montgomerie and Jose Maria Olazabal.

“To shoot 62 in one of the best fields you are ever going to see in the world is fantastic,” said Ramsay of his effort in an event hosted by Abdulh Al Naboddah.

“It’s great you can put some money back to charities. I’ll be donating it to Help for Heroes, which does a tremendous job with guys who come back from serving their country, and Cornerstone, a Scottish charity I was asked to be patron of a few years ago.

“It works with people with disabilities in Scotland to make their life a little easier. Hopefully that will be a big boost for them.”
