Racquetwall makes its mark in schools

SQUASH: James Gillespie’s is one of the first schools to get set up for racquetwall – and coach Jim Hay is hopeful that it will soon spread throughout Scotland.

Racquetwall is a Scottish Squash initiative and the court is a few coloured lines on a wall.

“Hitting a ball against a wall is a natural instinct and something that almost anyone can do,” said Hay, a personal trainer and squash coach.

“I run a fitness class for the teachers at Gillespie’s and they have enjoyed racquetwall and it is a good way to promote squash. A few pupils have tried it and enjoyed it. It is a fun thing to do and a great way to exercise. It could be another alternative to the PE programme.”

Knox Academy in Haddington is another school set up for racquetwall and several in West Lothian have also taped the lines on the gym walls.

Hay wants the new sport it to spread in Edinburgh, and he is set to approach his own former school, Tynecastle High.
