Racing: Ryan Colley stands tall at 6ft 2in

RYAN Colley enjoyed a memorable first mount in public when he steered Hab Reeh to victory in the opening amateur riders’ handicap at Hamilton for Yorkshire trainer Ruth Carr.

The 20-year-old from York measures a lanky 6ft 2in and towered over his 12 rivals as he made his way to the paddock before Hab Reh nudged out Weetentherty by a neck. Colley said: “Two Mondays ago I was 10st 10lb and tonight I was on the scales at 9st 7lb – I nearly passed out as I had been losing so much weight. They went quick early on and I was last at one stage. He really picked up for me and fairly flew home.”

Ryan Clark was suspended for nine days, to be notified, after using his whip above the permitted level on the runner-up.

Keith Dalgleish saddled the one-two in the 5f handicap as Adrian Nicholls-ridden Secret Advice pipped stablemate Salvatore Fury by a nose. The trainer, based just a few miles away at Carluke, had ten runners on the seven-race card and he said: “It wasn’t a surprise to me the way they finished as things didn’t go her way at Yarmouth after she’d won nicely at Carlisle. Overall, the horses are running well and we are looking forward to sending Santefisio down to Ascot for the Royal Hunt Cup.”

Eric Alston was on the mark with King Of Paradise, who made all for an easy success under Jason Hart in the 11f handicap. The Preston trainer said: “He has pulled like hell in the past so we thought he might just relax better in front. It’s great when a plan comes together.”

Meanwhile, a private funeral for Sir Henry Cecil will be held in Newmarket on Monday week. The legendary trainer died on Tuesday morning, aged 70, following a long battle with stomach cancer. While his funeral will be a family-only occasion, a further celebration of Cecil’s life is planned for a later date, although details are yet to be confirmed.
