Racing: Jonny makes name for himself

ON THE day trainer Jim Goldie launched the Johnnie Delta Racing Club, the horse the syndicate was named after was successful at Ayr – albeit with it a different spelling.

A clerical error appears to have been the reason for the equine Jonny Delta’s name not matching his new owner but, as far as publicity goes, a win on the day the new venture is launched could not be better timed.

Goldie secured a treble on the card after wins for Mr Pagan (8-1) in the Employment Enterprise 10 Years In Business Maiden Stakes and Forest Flyer (100-30 favourite) in the John And Betty Dowse Memorial Handicap (Qualifier For £15,000 Betfair Scottish Stayers’ Final) to go with Jonny Delta’s success The 13-2 shot won over hurdles at the track in March and showed his versatility as he triumphed in the Employment Enterprise Scotland: Nation of Enterprise Handicap in the hands of Graham Lee, who was aboard each of Goldie’s winners. “The club is named after him but it’s a different spelling, that’s probably down to someone who couldn’t spell!” said Goldie.

“There’s 18 horses in the club. It’s the amalgamation of Jim Goldie Racing and Johnnie Delta and we’ve obviously got a few nice horses. The flagbearers, Jack Dexter and Hawkeyethenoo, finished first and second at Ascot on Champions Day so you don’t get much better than that.

“Jonny Delta is a frustrating horse and for some reason he’s much talked about. He enjoys Ayr and has won three here now. He’s won a bumper, over hurdles and now on the Flat.”

The feature race, the Employment Enterprise 10 Years In Business Handicap went the way of Awake My Soul in a thrilling three-way photo-finish. Fort Belvedere looked to have stolen a race-winning margin approaching the final furlong, but Awake My Soul and Another For Joe were making relentless progress on his outside. The three flashed home together, with David O’Meara’s 7-4 favourite getting the verdict under the in-form Danny Tudhope by a nose.
