Racing: Destination triumphs for the ladies at Musselburgh

A SELL-out 9,000 crowd on Ladies Day at Musselburgh was brought to its feet when Blue Destination won a thriller for the featured HBJ Employment Solutions Ladies Day Cup Handicap.

The 17-2 winner, trained at Malton by John Quinn and available at 20-1 in the morning, scrambled home in the rain-softened ground by half a length from Golden Future, with Stags Leap only a neck back in third.

Successful jockey Michael O’Connell said: “He’s a grand horse and when he came to us we thought he needed a good gallop and a stiff mile and a quarter. He worked well with some sharp horses and here he is winning over a mile and six furlongs.”

Duran Fentiman-ridden Liberty Island, the 48th winner in the colours of Highland Racing, took division one of the Jenners & Frasers Handicap for Strathaven trainer Ian Semple.

He said: “This was only his second run for us since coming from Ireland. I think he’s better than this class as Duran said he was freewheeling so we might raise him in grade.”

Keith Dalgleish is enjoying another fine season and the Carluke handler struck in the M & F Funeral Services Maiden with Mazeppa.

“He’s very versatile and he’s raced at 5f, 6f and now 7f today,” he said. “He looks above-average. We might look at a better race but he will make a lovely three-year-old next season.”

Turning to today’s action Three Am Tour can give the Richard Hannon team a nice boost ahead of Ascot by claiming York’s Bond Tyres Trophy.

While her bare statistics of one win in six starts hardly set the world alight, Three Am Tour comes into this race with plenty of experience yet still on a fair mark. She has already proven she can handle cut, which could prove crucial given the unsettled weather forecast and is worth a shot at a big price.

Tullius can further build on his burgeoning reputation in the Listed Ian And Kate Hall Macmillan Stakes.

Trained by Peter Winkworth previously, Tullius has made a dream start for Andrew Balding by winning each of his two starts to date. Most recently successful on Listed company at Windsor, he saw off the well-regarded Skilful on soft ground and looks a horse firmly on the trail of Pattern glory.

All eyes will be on Pearl Secret as he takes the next step up the ladder in the Novae Bloodstock Insurance Scurry Stakes at Sandown. The three-year-old will be trying to keep his 100 per cent record intact as he has a first crack at Listed company in this five-furlong test.

David Barron has taken a patient approach so far with this July Cup entry, restricting him to just one juvenile outing which he won in style at York last October. There were three subsequent winners in behind that day and the word was out on his reappearance as Pearl Secret was really well backed to triumph at Doncaster and duly did. That win came on heavy ground, but he showed his versatility winning in quicker conditions back at York. Pearl Secret picked up in the style of a really good colt that day and his Group One engagement in the July Cup shows the regard he is held in at home.

Sam Sharp merits an interest in the Betfred The Bonus King Handicap after a luckless run at Newbury. He has claimed second place in both his starts this term, most recently in Berkshire.

Don Libre can make it third time lucky for trainer Paul Cole in the Racing & Music Nights At Lingfield Park Median Auction Maiden Stakes.

Our Jonathan looks to have tomorrow’s Bathwick Tyres Cathedral Stakes at Salisbury at his mercy. A classy juvenile when he won the Cornwallis Stakes and a Group Two in France, it all went wrong at three. However, Ryan showed his skills by nursing him back to his best and he had a fruitful campaign last summer, topped off with the Ayr Gold Cup.

Returning at Haydock last month, he saw off Regal Parade without much fuss and if he is on a going day, it is hard to see what can beat him here.
