Racing: Caviar delivered fresh by air

AUSTRALIAN sensation Black Caviar has arrived safely in Britain ahead of her intended run at Royal Ascot.

The six-year-old mare is unbeaten in 21 starts for trainer Peter Moody and is a hot favourite for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at the Royal meeting.

Black Caviar landed at Heathrow airport late yesterday afternoon after a 30-hour journey from Melbourne. Moody’s charge will be staying at Jane Chapple-Hyam’s Newmarket yard during her British sojourn, along with her fellow international raiders.

Chapple-Hyam tweeted: “Black Caviar due shortly at Abington Place Stables, she joins Ortensia and Joy and Fun the other international horses.”

At Hamilton yesterday, Spavento and Ayrshire-born David Allan won a thriller for the Weatherbys Bank Fillies’ Handicap after they came late to nail Silly Gilly by a neck in the shadow of the post. The winner scored for the second time at the Lanarkshire track having won over course and distance in May. Her Preston trainer Eric Alston said: “I didn’t think she had a cat in hell’s chance coming down the hill but David said she seems to like being ridden like that.”

Allan went on to complete a double when La Bacouetteuse scrambled home by a nose but there was a sting in the tail as he received a four-day ban (June 24-27) for using his whip above the permitted level.

La Bacouetteuse is trained near Hawick by ex-conditional rider Iain Jardine who said: “He’s a really happy horse and he loves it here. He’s best when nice and fresh and we may go for a two-miler at Pontefract next.”

Sandwith completed a hat-trick under Luke McNiff – who received a one-day careless riding ban – in the Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Handicap and will attempt to extend his winning sequence at Musselburgh next Friday.

Haddington trainer George Foster said: “He’s never looked back since we took him to Southwell around Christmas. He’s got arthritis and enjoys being turned out for two or three hours in the paddock. He really is in good form.”

Julie Burke gave Hopes N Dreams a fine ride as the partnership led from halfway before storming away with the Weatherbys Printing Handicap. Winning trainer Kevin Ryan said: “We got her after she won a seller at Hamilton and the owners have been very good as she’s for my apprentices to ride.

Meanwhile, Keith Dalgleish’s smart colt Stonefield Flyer has suffered a setback, which will rule him out for the rest of the campaign. Twice a winner as a two-year-old and second to Frederick Engels in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, he finished in the same position on his reappearance in a conditions event at Hamilton.

Dalgleish said: “He suffered a little injury, he’s going to miss the summer and hopefully we’ll bring him back for next year.”
