Platinum powers to well-backed win

RUSS Kennemore took his Musselburgh strike-rate to 30 per cent when landing the featured Pentland Land Rover Handicap on well-backed Platinum.

Supported from 10-1 into 7’s, Philip Kirby’s gelding hit the front at the furlong pole before beating Merchant Of Dubai by one-and-a-quarter lengths. Kennemore said: “Every time I come here I seem to ride a winner for Phil and long may that continue. I enjoy riding the track and things just seem to drop right. Platinum is in good form and he was a good second last time at Catterick. It was all pretty straightforward tonight and he travelled well – he should win again all right.”

Kennemore received a three-day ban (7-9 June) for weighing in 2lbs heavy at 8st 10lb on the winner.

Bill Turner looks to have a nice two-year-old prospect in Money Team, who romped to victory in the Canaccord Genuity Maiden Stakes for Joe Fanning.

The Somerset trainer was at the half-way point of an 800-mile round trip and has now saddled two winners from just five runners at Musselburgh. Turner said: “This is a really decent horse and he was too keen and he maybe didn’t stay five-and-a-half furlongs on his debut at Bath. I haven’t anything in mind but we’ll give him a step up in class after I have a word with his owner.”

Leading unpaid rider Jamie Hamilton shone in the amateur riders handicap when making all on Goodlukin Lucy for Penrith trainer Dianne Sayer.

At Goodwood meanwhile, the Casco EBF Cocked Hat Stakes was reduced to a match as Disclaimer mastered the 1-2 favourite Contributer but recent history shows the winners of the 11-furlong Listed event should always be taken seriously. Staged a little too late to be a relevant Derby trial, it still produced the St Leger hero Masked Marvel in 2011 and the ill-fated Group One performer Rewilding a year earlier.

Disclaimer (13-8), trained by Sir Henry Cecil, was raised in class after collecting a couple of handicaps, and his impeccable pedigree suggests he may yet make up into a smart colt as he quickened away from his opponent in obliging fashion.

Tom Queally was forced to pacemake for Ryan Moore and Contributer,
who was rated 7lb superior and pulled past Disclaimer with two furlongs remaining.

One crack of the whip from Queally saw Disclaimer draw back alongside and this relative of Reams Of Verse, Elmaamul and Midday soon turned it into a two-and-a-half-length advantage. Magic City (16-1) carried the red and white silks of retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson in the Reheat Handicap, seeming to reserve his best effort in some time for Willy Twiston-Davies.

“I spoke to Alex this morning, I said ‘where are you, you’re probably still lying in bed’,” said trainer Richard Hannon. “He said he was clearing out his office at the ground. I told him he was worth backing each-way. The horse has been disappointing, but the kid gets on well with him.”
