Piercy storms into contention after final-round 62 in Florida

Scott Piercy hit a nine-under-par round 62 to claim a share of the lead on the final day of the Transitions Championship in Florida.

The 33-year-old birdied seven birdies in his first nine holes today and added two more at the 14th and 16th. It took Piercy to 12 under, alongside Sang-Moon Bae and Jim Furyk, who shared the overnight lead with Retief Goosen.

Goosen, twice a winner of the event, made a poor start to his final round, with a double bogey on the first. He dropped another shot at the next hole to slip four shots off the pace on eight under, alongside Padraig Harrington.

Luke Donald birdied the fifth and sixth holes to move to within two shots of the lead on 10 under.

Elsewhere, South Korea’s Charlie Wi made an octuple-bogey for the second successive week on the PGA Tour, carding a 13 on the par-5 fifth hole. Wi had three straight shots hit a tree and go behind him and on to the practice range.

His troubles began with a tee shot into the right rough. His 6-iron came out to the right into the trees. From there, Wi had a tree in front of him with a trunk about three feet high until it split into two limbs, leaving a four-foot gap. Wi tried to hit 5-iron through the gap, but it struck the tree and went onto the range. He tried it again and got the same result.
