Phoenix are shining but Kool Kats are on a ‘high’

The biggest Capital clash of the weekend will be at the Crags Sports Centre on Sunday when fierce local rivals Polonia Phoenix and Edinburgh Kool Kats meet for the first time this season in the Scottish Women’s League at 3.20pm.

Given the poor spectator facilities at Boroughmuir’s otherwise excellent club centre it will certainly be standing room only, not only for the senior game but probably also for the cadet women’s game at 11.20am and junior women at 1.20pm.

Phoenix have opened their senior season brilliantly to top the table with three convincing wins.

Sparked by their improving youngsters, including Claire Paxton, Hilary Wood, and Beth Mackie, and backed up by a bench of experienced internationalists, coach Stewart Harris’s team will be confident that they can draw first blood against the Kats.

But Kats coach Graham Gunn is also relishing the game and believes that, thanks to his two new signings, Irish caps Shauna O’Connor and Louise
Gray, Kats have the bench to cope with their
normally much bigger
opponents.

“Both are big, versatile players who can play in several positions at both guard and forward and have fitted in well with the team since their arrival,” he commented.
