Paul Mulrennan badly hurt at Hamilton

The meeting was delayed for 90 minutes after Mulrennan’s mount Boxing Shadows clipped heels and came down in a Handicap race.

As Mulrennan was taken to Wishaw General Hospital the course was temporarily left with insufficient medical cover, leading to the delay.

The incident was caused when eventual winner Manatee Bay and Joe Fanning drifted left, leaning into Boxing Shadows who appeared to clip heels. Fanning was handed a seven-day ban for careless riding.

Clerk of the course Hazel Peplinski said: “We were waiting for a head scan at Wishaw accident and emergency and I’m pleased to tell you that is clear – that’s really, really important as they were concerned for his head.

“He was sounding very confused and is concussed, but the scans are now clear and that is really good news with a head injury.

“He has also sustained some other injuries which will keep him out of racing for quite some time…a left broken shoulder,  collarbone, ribs on his left side and a punctured lung.

“It’s enough, but these things he will recover from. We were concerned about his head, but that is clear.

“He is moving all limbs and is conscious.”

Hopes N Dreams was the star of the show once racing resumed as she scorched to her sixth course and distance victory in the EBF Stallions Conditions Stakes.

Winning jockey Barry McHugh said: “I’d never sat on her before today and she’s  amazing. She clearly loves it here and she’s blown the others away. I wouldn’t be surprised if she ends up Listed class.”

The first four favourites – all odds on – were turned over, so the well-backed Aramist brought some welcome relief for punters as the 6-4 market leader landed the 4.40 Handicap.

Kempton’s meeting yesterday was also delayed after an incident in the Maiden Stakes which resulted in three fallers.

David Lanigan’s Don Ottavio appeared to break down badly just inside the final furlong, throwing Ted Durcan to the floor.

Sylvester Kirk’s Silvercombe was close behind and had nowhere to go, being brought down and sending Renato Souza crashing with him, while Seb Sanders was also brought down on board John Hills’ Synonym.

Sanders was fit for the following race while Durcan rose to his feet but Souza was taken to hospital for precautionary X-rays.
