Paul Lawrie follows Open with charity walk

PAUL Lawrie will warm down after the two biggest weeks of his season by undertaking a 79-mile walk in memory of Adam Hunter, his long-time coach who died last year.

The former Open champion and his wife Marian have decided to tackle the Great Glen Way, which runs from Fort William to Inverness, along with four of their friends.

The sextet will set out on Tuesday, 24 July – two days after the Open Championship finishes at Royal Lytham. Lawrie will be playing there straight after the Aberdeen Asset Scottish Open at Castle Stuart near Inverness the previous week.

The proceeds from the charity walk will be split between Lawrie’s Foundation and the Beatson Centre in Glasgow, where Hunter, one of the most respected coaches in the game, was treated during his battle with leukaemia.

“Myself, Marian, Alan and Val Reid and Brian and Audrey Morrison are walking the Great Glen Way and we are looking to raise as much as we can for the Paul Lawrie Foundation and Leukaemia Research Beatson,” said Lawrie, who paid an emotional tribute to Hunter at his funeral in Glasgow.

“Adam was treated at the Beatson and half the money will go directly to help others fight cancer. So please dig deep and help us reach our target.”

Two years ago, the Lawries walked the West Highland Way with four friends, including Alan and Val Reid, to raise funds for his foundation.
