Paul Gallacher rejoins Dunfermline as St Mirren land Graeme Smith

Former Scotland goalkeeper Paul Gallacher has completed his return to Clydesdale Bank Premier League newcomers Dunfermline.

The 31-year-old has signed a two-year contract after rejecting a similar offer from St Mirren, to whom he moved from the Pars in 2009. The former Dundee United and Norwich player kept 25 clean sheets in 82 appearances in his first spell at East End Park.

Dunfermline manager Jim McIntyre told the club's official website: "Paul has been a top goalkeeper over the years and we are delighted to get him. He was sought after by a few other clubs so I'm very, very pleased to have secured his signature."

Gallacher will now compete for a first-team place with former Saints team-mate Chris Smith, who he kept out of the Paisley team. Smith played in every one of Dunfermline's Irn-Bru First Division matches last season and recently agreed a new deal.

McIntyre said: "It is important that we have two good keepers vying for the number one spot and Paul's arrival will provide good competition."

St Mirren moved quickly to replace Gallacher by signing former Rangers goalkeeper Graeme Smith.

Smith, who was released by St Johnstone at the end of the season, has signed a one-year contract with the option of a further year.

The 28-year-old's arrival was announced hours after Gallacher completed his return to the Pars from the Paisley side, who finished 11th in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League last season.

Smith told the club's official website: "I'm just glad to be sorted and I hope to play my part in a good campaign with St Mirren. It is hard in football just now due to the financial climate - there are more players out there than there are squad places available.

"It is nice that Danny Lennon wants me here at St Mirren and this is a new challenge for me which I'm looking forward to."

Smith will compete for the No 1 jersey with former team-mate Craig Samson.
