Patience sweeps to Grangemouth glory

ATHLETICS: Mhairi Patience (Douglas Academy), a gold medallist in the 80m hurdles at the Sainsbury’s UK School Games in London last month, was in outstanding form in winning the 15-17 years Scottish pentathlon title at Grangemouth.

The Glasgow girl amassed an impressive 3,063 points. She won the 80m hurdles in 11.95 secs and was also first equal in the high jump, clearing 157cm – the same height as Anna Nelson (Glen Urquhart High School).

Anna took the bronze medal, with silver going to Emma Canning (St Aloysius College), who helped Scotland win an under-16 team bronze at the Schools’ International Indoor Pentathlon Championships in Glasgow in December. Another member of the under-16 indoor team, Pamela McNicol (Carluke High School), won the under-15 gold with 2,728 points, while Holly McArthur (Kilsyth Academy) took the senior one title with 1,222 points. Hollie Lister (St Mungo’s RC High School) won the over-17 gold with 2,348 points.

In the boys’ 13-17 years, Taylor Nimmo (Graeme High School) won the shot putt, 100m hurdles, long jump and 200m and could well afford to miss out on the 1,500m and still take gold with 3,041 points.

Cal McLennan (Royal High School) won the senior one title with 1,153 points, Bruce Sorbie (Robert Gordon’s College) took the under-15 gold with 2,625 points and Sam Wightman (Fettes College) was the over-17 champion with 2,866 points.
