Paralympic Games: Kerr confident despite defeat in wheelchair rugby

MIKE Kerr is adamant Britain can still win a wheelchair rugby medal despite opening their campaign with a defeat to world champions America.

The clash was the first of the London 2012 competition at the Basketball Arena and Kerr and Co got off to a perfect start. They led the first quarter from the off, ending it 13-11 ahead. However that was as good as it got for the British team as America took
control and won the game 56-44.

Kerr featured for just over
14 minutes and contributed two goals to Britain’s cause. However, he admitted his performance was reflective of the match – a good start before losing control.

But still the 29-year-old, the only Scottish player on the 11-strong team, is adamant all is not lost as they prepared for a second match is as many days – France up today.

“We were playing the No 1 team in the world; it was always going to be tough,” said Kerr. “But to be honest with you I didn’t think it was that physical. If you look at the first quarter we were three up at one point. So we started the game really, really well.

“For me personally it went a bit pear-shaped in the second quarter and I never got the momentum back. We are still confident, though, and we have got confidence in our ability as a squad and we will move on to the next games – they come thick and fast. We are definitely capable of winning a medal and we will come out next time better for this.”
