Paddle to the medal for city swimmers Kris Gilchrist and Lewis Smith

Edinburgh swimmers Kris Gilchrist and Lewis Smith both hit the medal trail on the final day of the British Gas ASA National Championships in Sheffield, the final selection event for next month's World Championships in Shanghai.

Gilchrist claimed a World Championship qualifying time in the 100m on Wednesday and the 27-year-old, who represents Edinburgh University, added a second title with victory in the 200m breaststroke.

Michael Jamieson, the former City of Edinburgh swimmer, won both the 100m and 200m breaststroke at the first round of World Championship trials in Manchester in March but with his selection for China in the bag, he opted not to take part this week.

In his absence, Gilchrist cruised to victory in a fast 2:10.16 and the 2008

Olympian finished more than three seconds ahead of Richard Webb.

Warender's Smith, who won the 400m individual medley, added another medal with a silver in the 200m event. City of Cardiff's Xavier Mohammed took the gold in 2:021.09 with the Edinburgh 22-year-old just snatching the silver from Adam Harrington in 2:02.42.

City of Glasgow's Robbie Renwick, winner of the 400m and 200m gold, ended the ASA Championships in style by setting a Scottish record of 49.53 secs in the 100m freestyle.

The 22-year-old had already made sure of World Championship qualification and his bronze medal in the 100m means he will now go to Shanghai next month as a member of the two British freestyle relay teams.
