Defending champion Alan Clyne is still on target for his tenth Scottish squash title after back-to-back wins at Edinburgh Sports Club, while Lisa Aitken stayed on course to retain her ladies’ crown after also progressing smoothly.

Clyne was promoted to top seed following the late withdrawal of Scottish number one Greg Lobban, and the 33-year-old looked a cut above the rest after disposing of eighth seed Martin Ross in the quarters and fourth seed Jamie Henderson in the semis, both in straight games.

The nine-time champion will face second seed Rory Stewart in Sunday’s final after the Perth youngster came from a game down to beat Aberdeen’s Chris Leiper in the second semi.

“It’s Rory’s first final. I saw some of his match against Chris and he’s found some good form,” said Clyne. “It’s good to get the tournament played and it’s great to reach the final again. So far, so good!”

Top-seeded Aitken defeated Stirling’s Rowan Niven in three games in yesterday morning’s quarter-finals and then outplayed her international team-mate Katriona Allen 11-4, 11-2, 11-4 in the semis. “I played quite well and I’m happy to get through 3-0,” said Aitken. “I’ve been doing a lot of work with my coach and I’m focusing on doing what I know I can do well.”

Aitken will bids for her fourth national title on Sunday against teenager Georgia Adderley, and she admitted: “It’s not quite close to the ten titles that Alan’s going for, but I had bad luck with illness and missed a few events. I’ll be targeting Alan’s total in future.”

Second-ranked Adderley came through a tougher semi-final against her club-mate and third seed Claire Gadsby, who took the opening game before Adderley rallied to win in four.
