Aberdeen and Stonehaven to host Tour of Britain finale

Next year’s Tour of Britain cycle race will reach its climax in the north-east of Scotland

The final stage of next year's Tour of Britain will begin in Stonehaven and end in Aberdeen.

Organisers have announced dates for the 2021 renewal and revealed that the final stage will start in Stonehaven and finish in Aberdeen on 12 September.

The eight-stage race will begin in Penzance on 5 September in what will truly be a cross-country event.

The destinations of the other stages have not yet been announced.

Both the Tour of Britain and the Women’s Tour are continuing their search for a new title sponsor.

Organisers SweetSpot pulled both events in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic but have confirmed their place on the UCI calendar for 2021.

The Women’s Tour, part of the Women’s World Tour, will take place in Oxfordshire and Suffolk from June 7-12.

There was no announcement with regard to the domestic Tour Series at this stage.

SweetSpot chief executive Hugh Roberts said: “We are working hard behind the scenes with our stakeholders on these events, and The Tour Series, to ensure they don’t just return, but come back better and stronger than ever before.”

SweetSpot will hope the announcements will give fresh impetus to the search for a replacement sponsor after the deal with OVO Energy came to an end last year.

“There has never been a better time to ride a bike or to get involved in cycling, and through events like The Tour of Britain and our work with local authorities across the UK we are in a unique position to work with brands targeting both the recreational and elite sporting sides of cycling,” Roberts said.
