Oscar Pistorius on playing in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

I have been very fortunate to play at some of the great courses around the world but being here at St Andrews is extra special. To think that some of the world’s greatest golfers have played here over the years makes this a true blessing.

If I’m being honest, my golf is pretty rubbish. I’ve not had much time to play over the last year and my game is fairly dodgy at the best of times but I am a serious competitor. In yesterday’s practice round I shot around 88 but today was closer to triple digits so we’ll how things progress this week. I am certainly very excited overall and look forward to playing these three courses (The Old Course, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie) over the next few days.

Growing up in South Africa I was privileged as a child to have the opportunity to go to the driving range with friends to hit some balls. When I was 15 or 16 my grandmother bought me a set of clubs for my birthday and I then started playing on some of the courses around the area. Over the years I have continued to enjoy the sport and this week is certainly the most amazing experience for me as a golfer. Sadly my game hasn’t improved much but I’m hoping the experience of this week will help bring things along.

There are parts of my game which are pretty good but I’m hoping to find a bit of consistency. Fifty per cent of my drives are absolutely fantastic but the other fifty per cent are abysmal.

I’ll be playing on Carnoustie tomorrow alongside Steve Redgrave, a good friend whom I’ve known for years, and teeing off just prior to Michael Phelps, whom I’ve never met but I’m certain will be a great competitor himself. My pro partner Paul McGinley is a great guy and I’m hoping I’ll be able to contribute to his score a bit and help him out when he needs it.

While I hope to see some improvement in my game, as long as I can make one decent putt, one decent drive and one decent chip during a round then that will be satisfying enough for me.
