The New Zealand pair closed the gap in the second half of the race but it wasn’t enough to stop Team GB’s taking gold.

Remarkably, it means Stanning and Glover are now unbeaten in 39 races, dating back to the World Championships in 2011.

In the men’s fours, Mohammed Sbihi, George Nash, Constantine Louloudis and London 2012 winner Alex Gregory finished in just under six minutes, less than two seconds ahead of second-placed Australia.
