North Berwick lift cup

HARD running full back Calum Smith was today savouring a worthy man-of-the-match accolade after North Berwick High emulated their senior side of 21 years ago by lifting the Bell Lawrie White Scottish Schools under-15 Cup with a stirring 21-10 win over Galashiels Academy at Murrayfield.

Prompted by the counter-attacking of Smith allied to some top class mauling the East Lothian side took command early on when centre Graeme Fairgrieve seized a loose ball to dart in from halfway, stand-off Sam Hughes converting.

North Berwick then doubled their lead through - appropriately - Smith before Gala hit back with a try before half-time from Callum McIntosh.

Although Gala further closed the gap through Willie Brownlee a later rally saw Steven Loy - part of an outstanding back row - seal North Berwick’s victory with Hugh completing a 100 per cent kicking record for a side also well served by wingers Chris Lekkas and Niall Grant.
