No rush for Speed's first win - Owain

Wales midfielder Owain Tudur Jones believes Gary Speed is the right man to lead his country forward and says short-term results are less important than longer-term improvement.

Speed has lost his first two matches in charge, the first game of the Carling Nations Cup against the Republic of Ireland and the Euro 2012 qualifier against England.

However, Tudur Jones, a late call-up into the squad for the final Nations Cup matches against Scotland tomorrow and Northern Ireland on Friday, insists the bigger picture is more important. "It is easy sometimes for people just to look at previous results and a big deal will be made that Gary Speed still hasn't had his first win," said the Norwich midfielder.

"Of course everybody involved will want to get that first win but I don't think they'll be stressing too much importance on it. There is a longer project here with Wales."

Speed has already made some big decisions, handing 20-year-old midfielder Aaron Ramsey the captaincy despite the reservations of his club manager Arsene Wenger. But Tudur Jones believes Speed, after 85 caps, has earned a respect and authority that some previous managers may not have had. "I think he (Speed) will always carry a bit of an aura because of what he has achieved as a player."
