New Christchurch Stadium opened

CHRISTCHURCH’S redeveloped rugby stadium was officially opened yesterday following its makeover for next year’s Rugby World Cup.

AMI Stadium, which will be known as Christchurch Stadium during the World Cup, has had a NZ$60 million upgrade with the new 13,000 seat Deans Stand the centrepiece of the redevelopment.

The overall capacity has been increased to 38,628 but temporary seating will boost that to nearly 45,000 for the World Cup. The stadium will host five pool matches and two quarter-finals.
