Neville’s ‘goalgasm’ goes viral on internet

CHELSEA’S extraordinary Champions League semi-final victory in Barcelona produced no shortage of talking points, including John Terry’s moment of red card madness, Ramires’ magical chipped goal and a Lionel Messi penalty miss.

CHELSEA’S extraordinary Champions League semi-final victory in Barcelona produced no shortage of talking points, including John Terry’s moment of red card madness, Ramires’ magical chipped goal and a Lionel Messi penalty miss.

However, it was Sky Sports’ co-commentator Gary Neville’s unusual reaction to Fernando Torres’ tie-clinching goal at the death which caused the biggest stir on the internet and social media websites.

The former Manchester United captain and England full-back began a long moaning sound when Torres picked up the ball on the halfway line which continued as he rounded Barca keeper Victor Valdes and reached a voice-cracking crescendo of “unbelievable” after the Spanish striker had slotted into the net.

Web wags christened it as a “goalgasm” and it soon led to a series of “mash ups” appearing on YouTube, including “When Gary Met Sally” which superimposed Neville’s delirious moaning to the famous Meg Ryan in the cafe scene.

Neville offered an explanation of sorts on his Twitter account yesterday morning when he posted “Wow football... My sore throat collapsed on the Torres goal!!! #squeakynevtime” and a picture of a packet of strepsils. Neville is already being ranked alongside other emotional commentaries, such as the famous Norwegian “Winston Churchill, Maggie Thatcher.... your boys took one helluva beating” outburst and Murray Walker’s lump in the throat moment when Damon Hill won the Formula 1 world championship.

Neville’s Sky colleague Geoff Shreeves was also the talk of Twitter thanks to his joykilling post-match interview in which he informed a visibly crestfallen Branislav Ivanovic that he was suspended for the final. Golfer Lee Westwood tweeted: “Geoff Shreeves has just been on the phone telling me I’ve never won a major!”
