Murray proves he is a great escape artist in New York

Andy MURRAY courted disaster and put his fans back in Scotland through late-night agony at the US Open in Flushing Meadow.

A lacklustre opening against Holland’s Robin Haase saw the world No.4 fall two sets behind before roaring back to force a fifth set and eventually triumph 6-7 (5-7) 2-6 6-2 6-0 6-4 in New York. But that does not tell the full story, for Murray raced into a four games to love lead in the final set against his Dutch opponent. Haase unearthed an incredible passage of play, though, and fought back to level at four games all. The Dunblane player moved ahead 5-4, only to squander a number of match points and, with the home crowd getting behind Haase it looked black for the Scot. Murray held his nerve though, and moved into the third round where he will face Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, who defeated Vasek Pospisil of Canada 5-7 6-4 7-6 7-6.
