Motocross: Ben Thomson is fit and raring to go

BORDERS teenager Ben Thomson has made a quick impression on the British Motocross youth title after recovering from a broken leg.

The 15-year-old Kelso High School pupil from Hume suffered the leg-break in an
accident at the turn of the year, but was back on the start line at the weekend for the first round of the GBXC (Great British Cross Country Championship) at Newtown in North Wales. The weekend started with a fun Enduro sprint on Saturday, which the young Scot used to tune up up his bike, and he joined more than 100 riders on Sunday morning where the youth riders set off behind the veterans.

Thomson got off to a poor start mid-pack into the first corner but emerged from the first woodland section the second youth, chasing leader Alex Walton.Halfway through the two-hour race, at the F1 refueling-type stop, Thomson was ten seconds behind the leader, but he pushed hard to catch and pass him and continued to push to open up a substantial lead. He passed veteran riders on his way through the field to eventually to finish first in class and an impressive sixth overall.

Thomson said: “I am delighted with this result after breaking my leg in
between Christmas and New Year. This was only my second outing of the year so I have plenty more in the tank, and I’m looking forward to the second round next month.”
