Mortonhall make presence felt by beating Glencorse

MORTONHALL moved to the top of their section in the Pollock (Scotrans) Ltd Edinburgh Summer League after making the biggest noise in a quiet week for fixtures.

Graeme Stark's side made home advantage count to beat Glencorse 6-2, leaping above the Milton Bridge men in the process.

"Another solid performance by the boys against a strong Glencorse side," declared Stark. "The match was played on a perfect night for golf, with everybody talking afterwards about birdies and eagles."

Colin Deans and Scott James both had two of the latter in their match. Deans got in on the act first by holing his second shot at the third and James replied two shots later by holing his third at the par-5. Deans eventually won that one but the only other victory on the night for last season's beaten finalists came from Alastair Shanks, by which time Mortonhall had the points in the bag.

"The greens at Mortonhall are superb at the moment," added Stark. "As a result, both sides enjoyed some great putting, albeit we enjoyed them just that little bit more."

In the only other games played, the spoils were shared at both Torphin Hill and Swanston New, where Turnhouse and Craigmillar Park were the respective visitors.

"We were missing four of our team members as we had our club championship and there seemed no room for manouvere with the tie," said Swanston New's Stewart Downing.

"It was a hard-fought draw that just about keeps us in with a chance of second place in the section, though we will need other results to go our way."

Turnhouse missed out on the chance to close within a point of Section A leaders Royal Burgess after dropping a point up at Torphin Hill.

It's Turnhouse v Royal Burgess on Thursday night, with the former also at Liberton this week.

"This is a pivotal week for us in the defence of our title and we have quite a few players missing so we are desperate to get a couple of good results," said Royal Burgess team manager Richard Hughes.
