SQUASH, baseball/softball and wrestling have made an International Olympic Committee shortlist for potential inclusion for the 2020 Games, the IOC said last night.
The sports will be put to the vote at the IOC session in Buenos Aires in September with one sport winning a place on the 2020 Olympic programme. Five other sports – karate, wakeboarding, sports climbing, wushu and roller sports – did not make the cut, meaning their chance of Olympic inclusion must wait another four years.
“It is a good mix between team sports and individual sports,” said IOC vice president Thomas Bach. “Wrestling managed to convincingly present the changes they have undertaken, both on a sporting level as well as in the organisation.”
Wrestling was taken off the 2020 Games programme in February in a shock move but lives to fight for its spot until September. Baseball and softball, both taken off in 2005, united into one federation and that paid off as they grabbed a spot on the list.
