Edinburgh’s Doug Kempsell was rested yesterday as Scotland made it through to tonight’s semi-finals at the
European Team Squash Championships in Amsterdam.

The 20-year-old won two matches out of two on Wednesday, helping the Scots to a 2-2 draw with Italy and a 3-1 victory over Switzerland.

National coach Roger Flynn opted to bench him for yesterday’s final group fixture with holders England, who topped Pool A as expected after whitewashing Scotland 4-0.

Top-ranked Scot Alan Clyne took a game off double world champion Nick Matthew, while Greg Lobban, Stuart Crawford and Kevin Moran all battled bravely against James Willstrop, Daryl Selby and Adrian Grant

The Scots then heard that Switzerland had beaten Italy 3-1 to hand them a semi-final spot as group runners-up. Kempsell can now expect to be recalled for tonight’s last four clash with Pool B winners France.
