Monty wants one more win for his ‘self-esteem’

COLIN Montgomerie is desperate to savour the winning feeling on the European Tour one more time.

The 48-year-old – Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup captain in October 2010 – became the most prolific British winner in European Tour history in July 2007 with his win at The European Open at The K Club.

It was his 31st title, surpassing Englishman Nick Faldo’s previous best of 30, and ended a 19-month winless streak.

However, Montgomerie, who has won eight order of merit titles, has not tasted victory since.

Montgomerie told The Golf Show on BBC Radio Scotland: “I want to win again on Tour. Just once. I’m not proud.

“I’ll take one more wherever it might be. It would mean that I’d be the oldest winner on the Tour, which would be a record, but that doesn’t interest me. My self-esteem would rise to a certain extent. I’d feel good about myself.”

Montgomerie, who is working for Sky Sports at The Masters this week, added: “Don’t tell sponsors over the years, but they didn’t have to pay me for winning.

“The feeling that you get after having stood up against 155 other competitors and won – that’s good.

“Think about that. Whatever business you might be in, you’re given a week’s examination and you’ve beaten all your peers for that particular week.

“Wow. What a feeling you have. Monday morning you walk tall into the office, your chest is out, you’re feeling proud of yourself.

“That’s the feeling that I want to try to get again.”
