Mommsen in line to make Scotland debut in Netherlands

PRESTON Mommsen could make his senior Scotland debut in next week's ICC Intercontinental Cup match in the Netherlands after being named in the squad for the four-day clash at Deventer.

The 22-year-old Carlton opening batsman, who has completed his four-year residency after moving to Scotland from South Africa to finish his schooling, has been in fine form of late.

He hit an undefeated hundred in the Scotland Lions' recent victory over Leicestershire 2nd XI.

Victory next week would take unbeaten Scotland back to the top of the Intercontinental Cup table.

Gordon Drummond resumes the captaincy of the side from Gavin Hamilton, who sits out this format of the game – but also misses the subsequent one-day international match in Rotterdam due to business commitments.

Former skipper Ryan Watson and Omer Hussain are unavailable for the same reason, Dewald Nel is injured, Kyle Coetzer is on county duty with Durham, and Freddie Coleman has school exams.

The 15 June one-day match will see Aberdeen-born all-rounder Josh Davey replace Simon Smith in the squad.

Middlesex's uncapped 19-year-old Davey has played in two Clydesdale Bank 40 games this season, including their recent win against the Dutch.

Scotland head coach Peter Steindl said: "Josh is a young cricketer who has been making excellent strides forward this year.

"He has scored a lot of runs in the Middlesex second team and had a few first-team opportunities. He will be a great addition to our squad."

Intercontinental Cup squad: Gordon Drummond (Carlton, capt), Douglas Lockhart (West of Scotland), Preston Mommsen (Carlton), Qasim Sheikh (Clydesdale), Richie Berrington (Greenock), Neil McCallum (Grange), Gregor Maiden (Grange), Majid Haq (Clydesdale), Moneeb Iqbal (West of Scotland), Matthew Parker (Forfarshire), Gordon Goudie (West of Scotland), Ross Lyons (Carlton), Simon Smith (Grange).
