Millar's superb shot sends Seton into seventh heaven

Seton lifted the South East Region under-17 Edinburgh Prison Officers' Social Club Cup after defeating Tynecastle 2-1 in a close and competitive encounter at Bonnyrigg's New Dundas Park.

Seton were always in charge of this encounter and took the lead through Calum McClure, retaining the advantage until ten minutes before full time when Tynecastle's Michael Downie bulleted home the equaliser. Seton were back in front a minute later however when Ben Millar struck a delightful free kick and sealed the cup with for the East Lothian side.

The game started in typical cup final fashion with both sides huffing and puffing but struggling to create any clear-cut chances. A midfield battle ensued with both Millar and Scott MacPherson cancelling out the Tynecastle midfield of Craig Bonar and Robbie Jack.

The first real chance did however fall to Tynecastle just inside ten minutes with Tommy Lyall shooting inches wide after some fine set-up play by Ousman See.

Less than five minutes later, though, Seton took the lead with some clever movement in the box by striker McClure. The move started with some intricate passing between Jack Wheatley and Aaron Stenhouse, and Millar sent in a low cross from wide for McClure to flick the ball into the net at the far post.

Tynecastle struggled to handle the pace of Seton and had it not been for some tough last-gasp tackling, this game would have been all over within the first 20 minutes.

MacPherson caused the Tynie defence the most trouble with his trickery and movement all over the pitch, and created the next opportunity with a mazy run down the right wing only for his cross to be headed out for a corner.

The resulting kick, taken by MacPherson, was swung in only for Stenhouse to head over from eight yards out when he had a clear sight on goal.

Tynecastle did start to make strides in the game and they created their best chance of the match so far five minutes before half-time as Jonathan Bisset took on the defence and had a shot from a tight angle tipped round the post by Joshua MacFarlane.

Ousman See took the subsequent corner and his cross to the far post to the waiting Bisset was inch perfect, but the striker put his header wide of the target.

The last chance of the first half fell to Seton as an acrobatic diving header from Stenhouse went just past the post after some excellent build-up play again by MacPherson.

The second half started in similar fashion to the first as neither team were able to break down the opposition, and the game looked like finishing 1-0 to Seton.

In the second half, it seemed that a single goal was going to settle it as neither side who find a way through.Tynecastle rallied, though, and were rewarded with a goal after a well-worked move involving Tommy Lyall and Downie. Lyall created some space on the edge of the area before crossing to Downie to ghost past the defence and slide into the far corner to level the score.

Parity was only momentary, as Seton restored their lead within a minute of the Tynecastle equaliser. MacPherson glided through the Tynie defence twisting one way then the other only for his legs to be taken from under him. Both he and Millar looked prepared to take the resulting free kick, and MacPherson ran over the dead ball to allow his team-mate to strike a low thunderbolt under the wall and into the net.

Seton had more than one clear-cut opportunity to stretch their lead, firstly when the pace of substitute Fraser MacKinnon took him past the Tynecastle defence but he shot wide at the one-on-one. Moments later, MacPherson smashed a cracking 30-yard left foot shot off the inside of the bar only for the rebound to be headed over by McClure.

Tynecastle struggled to get back into the game and as the minutes ticked by Seton held on to deservedly win the cup in comfortable style.

After the match, Seton coach Brian Lauder felt there was only going to be one winner: "We were by far the better team today and our midfield controlled the game from start to finish. Having lost two cup finals last year it was fantastic to finally get our hands on a trophy. We also showed today that we can match any of the best teams in the league."
