Mijhaar gives Atzeni winning debut at Hamilton

The 6-1 chance, trained at Newmarket by Roger Varian, made every yard of the running to beat Beaumont’s Party by a length and a half.

Atzeni said: “It was my first ever ride at Hamilton and I didn’t even get the chance to walk the track as I had flown up from York and got here with 25 minutes to spare. The thing about Mijhaar is to get him settled which I did and he was only a little keen.

“I wound things up rounding the turn and he stayed on really well for me. This is no surprise to us as he’s always been a nice horse and has ran in good races. He is definitely a horse to look forward.”

Good Old Boy Lukey looks a really nice prospect after romping to victory in the opening juvenile race under Lee Topliss. Trained by Richard Fahey, the well-backed 6-4 favourite slammed fellow newcomer Thornaby Nash by three and a quarter lengths. Topliss said: “He’s the nicest horse I’ve sat on this year and he did everything I asked of him. He should have a bright future and he did well to handle the tacky ground.”

Topliss, who completed a double on Heaven’s Guest, was later given a two-day careless riding ban in the maiden won by Chevagris whose trainer Alan Swinbank also went on to record a double with Coral Sands.

Coral Sands followed up his recent course and distance success in the mile handicap and his jockey Andrew Mullen said: “He’s in good heart at the moment and he travelled strongly for me. I don’t know where he goes next but he’s certainly at the top of his game and should stay further.”

Meanwhile, William Hill has become the title sponsor for one of Musselburgh’s biggest race days, the Scottish Sprint Cup day on Saturday, 15 June. The bookmaker is sponsoring the whole of the seven-race card, including the £70,000 William Hill Scottish Sprint Cup, a five-furlong dash which is known as ‘Scotland’s fastest race’, to be covered live on Channel 4 Racing.
