Miedzybrodzki aims to be name to conjure with for Scots in Luxembourg

Beach specialist Robin Miedzybrodzki heads indoors this weekend to give Scotland’s men’s volleyball team a boost for the 25th Novotel Cup in Luxembourg.

The former City of Edinburgh player, who played on the international beach circuit with England’s Tom Lord last year, is part of a Scotland team with a strong Capital connection.

Three of the current Edinburgh team – Niall Collin, Jamie McHardy and Mike Penny – are included as well as former players Miedzybrodzki and setter Gavin Watt, who plays with AS Cannes in the south of France.

Scotland open against Denmark and then face hosts Luxembourg and then England at the event which coach Simon Loftus sees as an important benchmark for his squad.

“The tournament in Luxembourg gives us a good chance to have a look at what we have available for the European Championships later in the year,” he said.

The Scotland women’s team are also involved in Luxembourg this weekend and face Luxembourg, Germany and England in their three matches. New coach Craig Faill has been working with his squad since last March but their only competitive outing this season was a narrow win over Ireland last autumn.

The squad have been training hard over the festive season.
