Matches at Musselburgh Athletic ground to a halt

MUSSELBURGH ATHLETIC fans may not see the Super League side play at Olivebank again until the middle of April.

Work on new facilities at the club's ground is due to start on 1 February and it's unlikely that Musselburgh are going to have a home fixture before then.

Having gone out of the Emirates Scottish Junior Cup, David McGlynn's men were due to play Kelty away in the Super League tomorrow and that is now likely to be rescheduled for next Saturday.

"The work on the new facilities is definitely going ahead and will start at the beginning of February," said McGlynn.

"It is going to take between eight and ten weeks to complete and we are going to try and play as many matches away from home as we can during that time.

"We will hopefully share with another local club, probably Tranent, while it's possible that we may also use Forrester Park." The existing changing rooms and clubhouse at Olivebank are being knocked down and will be replaced by facilities that McGlynn says are badly needed.

"It is a big financial outlay for the club but is something that has to be taken care off as the facilities we've got at the moment are a disgrace," he added. "We're getting changing rooms, hospitality facilities and even a wee gym – everything we need for a semi-professional club."

During the big freeze, Musselburgh have been training on the same indoor pitch that Hearts use at their Riccarton base.

"We've had six sessions on the 3G pitch at Heriot-Watt and have done pretty well in the circumstances," said McGlynn, who has failed in one bid to bring in a new face but is still hoping to add a couple of bodies to his squad.

Club captain Wes Mitchell, meanwhile, is getting closer to making a return to training after missing most of the season to date.
