Martin goes out fighting

Edinburgh’s Martin Campbell and Troon’s Angus Gilmour put up a great fight before going out 17-21, 21-12, 15-21 to Austrian No. 4 seeds Juergen Koch and Peter Zauner in the first round of the Scottish International Badminton Championships at the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow.

There was heartbreak, too, for title hopeful Paul van Rietvelde. The Longniddry 20-year-old was forced to pull out of the event through illness.

Campbell’s younger brother, Michael, and Patrick Machugh, from Kinross, lost 10-21, 11-21 to Denmark’s Kasper Antonsen and Frederik Colberg.

In the singles, Bothwell’s Kirsty Gilmour progressed but all the Scottish men went out.
