Maroon magic sees Tynie secure a Dunbar double

Tynecastle sealed a club double during a weekend of SPORTSassist South East Region Cup finals at Dunbar, with the maroons at under-14 and under-15 level defeating Hillfield Swifts and Hutchison Vale respectively.

On an afternoon of football hampered by a swirling gale that whipped the East Lothian coast, only four goals graced the two finals, with Mark Shiells striking the only goal of the under-14 showpiece and Ryan Clarke's brace proving sufficient to swing the result in the under-15 match.

Shiells' solitary strike in the second half saw off the stubborn resistance of Fife side Swifts, who found Tynie goalkeeper Sean Brennan in fine form as they peppered shots towards him in the opening stages.

After the break, Shiells capitalised on a rebounded strike on James Donaldson's goal, the Swifts No.?1 pushing away a shot into the path of the flying winger, who netted as the goalie lay grounded. Brennan committed a rare error less than 60 seconds later, spilling a headed backpass to the feet of Stewart Hamilton, but the Hillfield attacker shot wide.

Tynecastle suffered Scottish Cup final heartache and finished third in Division 1, but will be happy with a season of success shaped by lifting the Kenny McLean Cup, John Crawford Memorial Trophy and, now, the South East Region Cup.

In the afternoon's second encounter, Clarke's sublime first-half double won the game for Tynie's under-15 team. He scored as early as the tenth minute, sending a header from a corner kick over a defender on the right-hand post and into the top corner.

Hutchie responded five minutes later, Jordan Combe taking advantage of a lapse in the Tynecastle defence to seize the ball and fire low past keeper Cameron Tulloch.

Another lack of concentration at the other end on the half hour handed Tynie the advantage once more.Scott McDougall, the Hutchie defender, was robbed of the ball and Clarke strode into the penalty area, showing strength to hold off his marker, and emphatically belted the ball high beyond Vale No.?1 Jack Roden.

The victory saw Tynecastle add the South East Region Cup to their Division 1 League Cup triumph.
