The Glaswegian produced seven birdies in 16 holes as he beat Spaniard Jorge Campillo 3&2 to progress to the last 32 at the East Lothian venue.

“We both played pretty well - only two holes were won by pars - and I’m delighted to sneak through,” said Warren, who now faces Magnus Carlsson after the Swede beat American Chase Koepka 4&3.

Richie Ramsay also progressed after he holed a 20-foot birdie putt at the last to kill off gritty David Howell, a two-time Ryder Cup player and the other semi-finalist from last year.

“It was a good putt at the last to finish it as David is a very dangerous player,” said the Scot. “He is pretty deadly when he gets his putter going, so I knew I had to keep my foot on the gas.”

Ramsay, who is attached to The Renaissance Club next door, now takes on Roope Kakko after the Finn beat Frenchman Gregory Havret, a former Scottish Open champion, at the 20th.

It was a successful morning for English players as eight title hopefuls from south of the Border progressed to the second round.

They included former Walker Cup player Oliver Fisher, who beat American Peter Uihlein, the 2013 European Tour Rookie of the Year, at the 22nd in a marathon match.
